MainStreetPops Gallery presents: The Hours Devour Us - A Solo Photographic Exhibition by Diego Milian Chavez

Artist reception on 1 July, 7:00-10:00.

“The Hours Devour Us” is a photographic series by Diego Milian Chavez that contemplates the relentless and inexorable passage of time and what we do with the limited hours allotted us which come to define our lives. The photo collages in this collection incorporate images that address timely themes such as the impermanent nature of our existence and the notion that every action has a consequence. The focus in these images is decay and the repetitive cycle of human existence. Notably, people are largely absent from these images but the presence of humanity is indelibly seen and felt throughout. I purposely employed images culled from throughout my life as it ties into the theme of time and collective memory. The incorporation of textual graffiti created by others speaks to the sense of enduring community by leaving traces of ourselves while acknowledging the ephemeral nature of the graffiti art form.

The Fall of New Rome Exhibit will present a select number of pieces from the entire collection that Fabio Esteban has created in the past two years. This series celebrates and embraces notions of imperfection, incompleteness and impermanence in western aesthetics. It is mostly made up of mix-media, collage and paintings that have been created over discarded materials such as table tops, plywood and corrugated carboard pieces rescued from the trash at the Art Student league of New York by the Artist. This show is curated by Main Street Pops Gallery.

Sense of Self Photo/Art/Film Exhibit

Opening January 29, 2021, Sense of Self is a community-focused, multi-disciplinary group exhibit of local artists. It explores the central theme and role of the Self in communities amid the backdrop of current life in America.

Diego Milián Chávez will have three pieces from his Huellas series. Huellas (Spanish for footprints) is meant to convey a sense of continuous community and belonging via our shared human experiences. The prints show multiple images combining to create a singular visual narrative. In these specific images we see communally graffitied walls, doors and concrete. Here are tags and other forms of expression from multiples of people who have passed through these places, all compelled to leave a trace, creating an additive community (and art!) while achieving a sort of permanence in an impermanent world. Their names and images join together and address the challenges of time and place. They posit that although paths didn't necessarily cross that this community is vital , real and will only continue to grow.

New York Responds Exhibit

  • Museum of the City of New York (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Opening Friday, December 18, New York Responds: The First Six Months looks at the still-unfolding events of 2020 through the eyes of over 100 New Yorkers. This crowd-sourced exhibition presents objects, photographs, videos, and other artworks that document and interpret the COVID pandemic, the racial justice uprisings, and the responses of New Yorkers as they fought to cope, survive, and forge a better future. A jury of a dozen New Yorkers representing many walks of life helped to make the selection from among tens of thousands of submissions received from individual artists and from partner institutions.

Fabio Esteban’s plywood mural/painting is featured in the show and it is tittled HOPE - Esperanza and was inspired by the BLM movement during the summer of 2020 as New Yorkers struggled to find hope in times of crisis and uncertainty.
